What is a Technical Operator?

When we hear the term technical operator (sometimes referred to as a technical operative), many people think first of the military. In the UK Armed Forces, technical operators are highly trained personnel who specialise in the deployment and management of technical surveillance equipment. Their role is critical: they use advanced technology to gather information, monitor activity, and support wider operational objectives in environments where precision, discretion, and reliability are essential.

But the skills of a technical operator are not limited to the military. In the commercial world, technical operators — such as those at SIASS — perform a vital investigative function for organisations, communities, and individuals who require specialist technical support.

Technical Operators in the Commercial Sector

Commercial technical operators are highly skilled investigative professionals. They utilise technical surveillance methods to support lawful investigations in the public and private sectors. At SIASS, our technical operators act as a Commercial Technical Support Unit — providing the same rigour, professionalism, and expertise you would expect from a government-trained operative, but within a commercial investigative setting.

Our technical operators support:

  • Councils and local authorities — assisting with community safety and investigative projects.

  • Social landlords — addressing issues such as anti-social behaviour, tenancy fraud, or safeguarding concerns.

  • Communities — providing reassurance and technical assistance where safety or wellbeing may be compromised.

  • Commercial organisations — supporting internal investigations or protecting business interests.

  • Private investigators — offering technical surveillance expertise to complement wider casework.

In every case, technical operators bring a depth of knowledge and investigative capability that ensures complex problems are addressed with the right tools and techniques.

Training the Next Generation of Technical Operators

From January 2026, SIASS, in collaboration with our colleagues at Verrimus — a world leader in technical surveillance counter-measures — will be providing training across the full spectrum of technical operative subjects.

This training will open access to professional-level instruction for those seeking to develop skills in technical surveillance and investigative support, ensuring that commercial technical operators are properly prepared to meet the evolving challenges of modern investigations.

Whether you are an organisation looking for technical investigative support today, or an individual considering training in this specialist field, SIASS is here to help.
